Visual artist Performer
Maki Takato's artistic vision was forged in the awe-inspiring landscapes of Nagano Prefecture. The sweeping mountain vistas and lush forests became the foundation of her creative expression, deeply influencing her work. Inspired by her father's Antarctic expeditions, Maki developed an early fascination with uncharted territories.
Her intellectual pursuits led her to study linguistics, while her experience in the healthcare field expanded her conceptual toolkit. Her time working in healthcare provided profound insights into the complexities of the human body and the intricacies of wellbeing, lending a unique perspective to her artistic works. Her experience as a professional ballroom dancer honed her understanding of human expression, cultivating a keen sense for the subtle interplay of movement and emotion.
Maki's artwork transcends mere aesthetics. Her pieces are carefully choreographed explorations of deeper narratives and emotions. One of her acclaimed installations merges traditional Japanese folklore with cutting-edge technology. In this work, wearable devices inspired by yokai (supernatural creatures from Japanese mythology) interact with viewers, creating an immersive experience that bridges ancient storytelling and contemporary art.
Another significant piece in her portfolio is a series of wooden canvases treated with mirror-like surfaces. These works combine traditional Japanese craft techniques like sakan (traditional plastering) and the use of gypsum with modern metallic painting methods. The reflective surfaces not only captivate visually but also prompt viewers to reflect on their own identities and their relationship with the artwork and surrounding environment.
Maki's unique background allows her to create art that is both visually compelling and intellectually stimulating, seamlessly blending physical form with abstract concept, tradition with innovation, and Eastern aesthetics with Western influences.
