“This is a fine saying of Plato: That he who is discoursing about men should look also at earthly things as if he viewed them from some higher place; should look at them... a mixture of all things and an orderly combination of contraries” By Marcus Aurelius
"Sound Harmonising" is a sculpture in London Battersea Park, capturing the harmony between man and nature through sound shapes. Recorded at Battersea Park, it visualizes the sounds of birds and planes digitally. This art piece transforms as the viewer's perspective shifts.
“Sound harmonisingʼ is a site-specific sculpture that my visual representation of a newly experienced sound, which harmonises people and nature within a given space. Since ancient times, humans have been fascinated by birds flying high in the sky, so they created their own representation of birds, viz. airplanes.
The best place to analyze the contrast between birds and planes is Battersea Park. This oxymoronic location, amidst trees and gardens, but also under a flight path, makes this a perfect place for observing the contrast between nature and man-made creation.
For the whole 12 hours of a day, I recorded the sounds of birds and aircraft which were audible in Battersea Park. Using this data, I created a graphical representation of the sounds and the various sound pitches.
Instead of presenting this data as a conventional graph on paper, however, I represented it as a circle with 12 bars, because of the never-ending succession between the progression of daylight and night.
This piece also represents a shift in perception. Please change the distance in perspective, and look at it horizontally or vertically. When you look down at the world from a higher viewpoint, what do you notice?
”Sound harmonising”
"Sound harmonising"
